Course Goals and Objectives:
The LIPHEA/HEALTH Alliance online course is intended to aid participants in creating seminars for faculty and end-users at Alliance institutions. At the end of the course, you will:

Cognitive Goals and Objectives:

  • Goal 1: Demonstrate a working knowledge of basic course creation tools (e.g., eXe) and best practices related to accessibility and publishing to course systems (e.g., Moodle);
  • Goal 2: Demonstrate a working knowledge of intellectual property issues;
  • Goal 3: Demonstrate a working knowledge of using Open Educational Resources for public health faculty;
  • Objective 1: Create a quality e-learning course for faculty and non-technical end-users using eXe and standard accessible design principles;
  • Goal 4: Demonstrate specific knowledge related to Health Alliance Web publishing process utilizing appropriate tools;
  • Objective 1: Create specific content items within the Health Alliance Plone system  (e.g., calendar events; add groups; page documents with pdf, PPts, eXe packages, and Flash objects using Enfold Desktop;  RSS feeds);
  • Goal 5: Demonstrate specific knowledge in multimedia production for event and lecture capture;
  • Objective 1: Capture an event using multimedia capture hardware and software tools ;
  • Objective 2: Publish multimedia files to Moodle/Plone;
  • Goal 6: Demonstrate a working knowledge of basic Web conferencing tools;
    • Objective 1: Host a group Web conference using open source Web conferencing tools

Affective Goals and Objectives:

  • Goal 7: Demonstrate a commitment to catalyzing organizational change in e-learning, and networking practice;
    • Objective 1: Create a realistic implementation plan to share a faculty/staff seminar series at member institutions;
  • Goal 8: Demonstrate an attitude of openness to developments in the field, willingness to learn and expand;
    • Objective 1: Actively participate in Health Alliance IT Community of Practice during and after the course.


Course Design:  The 5 week online course will consist of synchronous and asynchronous components involving hands-on application of hardware and software for web publishing, and e-learning activities. The Web-based course will be a follow-up to the LIPHEA/HEALTH Alliance E-Learning and Networking Technologies Workshop: Building a Regional Community of Practice. Participants will receive instruction in creating train-the-trainer seminars for non-specialists. Upon completion of the workshop participants will be equipped to conduct seminars for faculty and staff in the use of relevant learning technologies. Additionally, each participant will receive a certificate of completion following the successful completion of course project.

The course is designed around 3 elements:
1. Conceptual – The Conceptual element is designed to provide you with the conditional knowledge of a particular topic. It focuses on conceptual and theoretical aspects of the discipline. These aspects will be developed via online presentations, self-paced tutorials and facilitated group discussions.
2. Hands-on Practice – Hands-on Practice is where you apply what you have learned. You will use tools and software to create content. You will upload draft versions demonstrating mastery of component content. You will also work collaboratively with your peers to complete some assignments.
3. Production - Production involves actual seminar/course development. You will use what you have learned in the Conceptual and Hands-on Practice elements to create individual courses/seminars to be utilized in the faculty/staff seminar series. Your instructor will be available online to assist in helping determine the most suitable development tools to use.

Basic computer knowledge
